My Flash Fiction Stories: 10 Bite-Sized Reads For You

Are you looking for something quick to read and these short stories are still not short enough? I’ve got just the stuff for you! Here’s a collection of some of my favorite flash fiction stories I’ve written over the years.

Flash fiction stories are any short fiction piece under 1500 words. Better yet, most of mine are all around 1000 words or less. That’s only 4-6 minutes each to read!

What makes flash fiction stories so great?

They’re short and sweet, jam-packed to deliver just as much as what longer works can. They’re also fun to write. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but could never find it in me the determination to write finish a novel. For me, writing flash fiction stories have become an escape.

I get to experiment with different styles, genres and techniques without fear of messing up something bigger. I can create characters and snippets of a fantasy world without having to stress too much on backstories.

In short, I love them.

So here’s a collection of 10 flash fiction I wrote:

1. A Modern Tale of Kinship (765 words)

A light, heartwarming look into an unusual friendship between two fairy tale characters in a modern world. There are some fun references to various folk tales.

2. Touring Nebula (363 words)

Two extraterrestrials go on a field trip to Earth and they’re not impressed 😀

3. Who Put the Eggs There? (670 words)

A fun, silly story about a family of chickens. That’s all the info you need.

4. You don’t have to be everyone’s hero, just mine (216 words)

Extra short, maybe a minute’s read. Inspired by the question, “What makes a villain, a villain?”

5. The Dreamcatcher’s Nightmare (100 words)

Everybody has a fear, even the one whose job involves entering people’s worst nightmares. This is what I’d probably call microfiction, and will take you less than a minute to read.

6. Bottled Letters (609 words)

A boy’s father is accused of treachery and is executed. Over the years, we watch him grow and write letters that he throws into the sea. Until one day he doesn’t.

7. Dear Great Grandma (746 words)

Probably one of my favorite piece of writing. Granted, it’s not exactly fiction, but who’s counting? An epistolary piece for my great grandmother who passed away in 2015.

8. Morning After (462 words)

This slice-of-life story explores a mother’s grief after the loss of a baby.

9. The Harbinger (750 words)

A poignant tale about a little girl who grew up in a world much like ours, only it’s been exploited by humans to the point of destruction. She meets the harbinger, and wonders if the end of the world is the best thing that could happen at this point.

10. His Last Gift (687 words)

I submitted this to my university newspaper. A heartfelt story about a recently-widowed old woman who finds an unexpected surprise.

Bonus: The Cawson Files: A Tragedy (1742 words)

Okay, if we’re being exact, this one falls right outside the word limit of flash fiction. But that’s still not too long, and I really wanted to include it here. I’m just gonna say this: it’s a tragic story told from 3 different perspectives.

What do you think? Did any of these flash fiction stories catch your attention?
