What is Canggu known for?
Canggu is perhaps the most popular destination for digital nomads in Bali. That’s because this little village has everything: the cool cafes and quaint boutique shops, verdant rice fields, amazing surf breaks, and lots of beaches.
Where in Bali is Canggu?
Lying 10 km north of Kuta, Canggu is located on the south coast of the Island of the Gods. If you’re flying into Bali, it’s roughly a 45-minute drive from the airport (or longer, if the traffic is bad). Taxi fares can vary anywhere between IDR 250.000 to 400.000.
Meanwhile, Canggu is approximately 30 km from Ubud (1 h) or 58 km from Kintamani (1 h 45 mins).
What is Canggu like in Bali?
As a coastal village, the beach stretches for around 10 kilometers in Canggu, from Berawa Beach all the way to Pererenan Beach.
Compared to the more touristy vibe of Kuta, Canggu is more relaxing and laidback. Though it is continuously gaining traction and popularity, there are still certain times and places in Canggu where you can enjoy a bit more peace and quiet.
It’s overall a favorite destination for surfers too, with lots of beaches that are beginner and amateur-friendly.
Areas in Canggu
Lots of first-timers might ask: where should I stay in Canggu? There is no definite classification of the smaller villages and different neighborhoods, but you can divide them into four main areas…
Batu Bolong – The heart of Canggu
Batu Bolong is the main neighborhood in Canggu and arguably its most popular. It’s the hub of great foods and nightlife, as well as plenty of budget hostels and accommodations. Batu Bolong Beach is also a favorite spot for first-time and amateur surfers.
Pererenan – Quiet and relaxing atmosphere
Pererenan might be the quietest and most laidback neighborhood yet, although a lot more new restaurants, shops, and villas are already in construction as I write this. It will inevitably experience a boom in tourists too, but for now is a fantastic place to stay in if you want the least amount of noise and hubbub.
Echo Beach – Best for surfing
While most of the beaches in Canggu are great for surfing, Echo Beach is an especially popular spot for more intermediate surfers due to the slightly more powerful and inconsistent waves, which means the surf is much less crowded.
The neighborhood itself is pretty cool as it boasts a fun mixture of nightlife, food, shopping, and nice hotels. It’s not as quiet as Pererenan, but is generally less crowded than Batu Bolong.
Berawa – Best for families
Finally, there’s Berawa, which borders Batu Belig and is very close to Seminyak. It’s actually a popular neighborhood for expat families as there are exceptional facilities like Finns Beach Club and Recreational Center, as well as clinics and schools.
If you stay in Berawa, you will get to enjoy both the casual surfing vibe of Canggu and the more modern shopping streets of Seminyak.
Now that we’ve established the major areas in Canggu, let’s look at the best places to eat (in no particular order)!
Best coffees in Canggu
1. BGS Bali – Best coffee in Bali
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Almond Milk Latte
Area: Echo Beach
BGS Bali not only makes one of the best coffees in Canggu, but it’s also a surf and lifestyle shop with a lively community. However, the place itself is quite small and almost always packed, so I prefer to get a cup to-go.
2. Revolver Espresso – Best coffee shake
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Revolver Coffee Shake & Carrot Cake Sandwich
Area: Batu Bolong
Revolver’s main location is in Seminyak, and this one in Batu Bolong is a little small and tight. Though if you’re just here for coffee, this shouldn’t be a problem. Their breakfast food isn’t bad either, but the highlight is definitely the coffee shake and carrot cake!
3. The Hula – Best specialty coffees
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Golden Milk
Area: Pererenan
The Hula is a Scandivanian coffee shop that offers a number of specialty coffee drinks, including the popular favorite, Golden Milk. Some of their breakfast foods are also pretty good and worth trying.
4. Hungry Bird Cafe
Price range: $
Must-try menu: Cappuccino & latte
Area: Berawa
Hungry Bird Cafe roasts some pretty damn good coffees at a decent price. The shop itself has a nice, airy feel, though it gets quite busy during the day.
Best brunch in Canggu
5. The Avocado Factory – Best breakfast in Canggu
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Avo Pancake, Avo Choco Mousse
Area: Echo Beach
If you’re a fan of avocados, The Avocado Factory will not disappoint. The fruits are always perfectly ripe, soft, and buttery, putting a twist on various classic brunch dishes. I’d even argue that this is one of the best places for breakfast in Canggu.
6. Brunch Club Bali – Best pancakes
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Porncakes
Area: Berawa & Pererenan
Brunch Club is best known for its scrumptious and aptly-named porncakes: massive, fluffy pancakes served with the most scrumptious toppings you can think of. I’m talking things like brownie chunks, butterscotch, cream cheese, and even marshmallow fluff! Their burgers and Grilled Haloumi salad were also really good.
7. Baked – Best scrambled eggs & sourdough
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Best Scramble
Area: Pererenan
Baked went viral last year with its divine scrambled eggs served with creme fraiche, roe, chives, and amazing sourdough toast. I’m usually skeptical of overly hyped places, but I must say it really did taste amazing. Their coffees weren’t half bad either, though the pastries were just okay.
8. TMO Coffee Bali – Best smoothie bowls
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Smoothie Bowls
Area: Pererenan
TMO Coffee not only serves excellent coffees and breakfast menus, but their small and rustic place creates quite a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. While it may not be as well-known as some of the top brunch spots in Canggu, it can still get quite busy on some days.
9. Touché – Stylish cafe vibe
Price range: $$
Must-try menu: Soufflé Pancakes
Area: Pererenan
Touché will remind you of those trendy and stylish cafes that line the streets in Seminyak. Amongst the beautiful decor and bright interior, you can enjoy everything from baked camembert to a hearty plate of truffle gnocchi!
10. Honey – Best minimalist vibe
Price range: $$-$$$
Must-try menu: Double Smashed Burger, Four Cheese Honey Toastie
Area: Pererenan
One of the best things about Honey is the simple and minimalist vibe of its interior, which makes it a nice place to catch up with someone over brunch. Both their sweet and savory menus are pretty tasty, but the Double Smashed Burger really took me by surprise—in a good way!

12. Canteen Cafe – Best cozy cafe atmosphere
Price range: $-$$
Must-try menu: Any of their smoothie bowls
Area: Echo Beach
With colorful surfboards lining the grey walls, this little cafe has got such a cozy and charming atmosphere. They also provide a free glass of water when you come in! This may not be a novelty for some of you, but remember that tap water in Indonesia is not drinkable.

Must-try menu: –
Area: Batu Bolong
Pork satay is definitely one of the specialties of Balinese cooking. The good news is that there’s a good one right in the heart of Canggu! One thing though: there aren’t that many seats here, so when it’s crowded, it’s always more comfortable to order to-go and enjoy the satay in your own place.
